This year's course, entitled Chamber Music in Many Forms! features the Portland String Quartet in three very different chamber music presentations. Master Fiddler Gregory Boardman will join the PSQ for the first session to discuss and demonstrate the differences between the "classical" approach and the "fiddling" approach to playing the violin. The session will include a performance of Boardman's Fiddle Quartet that was premiered this past summer at the American Music Festival at Shaker Village. On November 12th,pianist Laura Kargul and the PSQ will discuss the special communication that happens with different instruments and combinations of players. For the third session, with violinist Dean Stein, the PSQ will present a sampling of Beethoven's three stylistic periods as seen so clearly in his string quartets: Early - a movement from the Op.18s, Middle - a movement from the Sturm und Drang quartets, and Late - a movement that defies category and stands as a monument to Beethoven's genius and transcendency.
The members of the Portland String Quartet combine a dedication to teaching with a successful and long-lived international performing career. Prior to the Quartet's inception in 1969, the members were involved with "Young Audiences" - a national organization headquartered in New York City that established a dynamic method designed to reach students of all ages. "Music in Maine" (1966-1969) was one of those programs that brought young professionals to schools throughout the State of Maine. Steve, Ron and Julia came to Maine through this program while Paul worked in a parallel program in New Hampshire. This hands-on, interactive approach continues to be a vital aspect of the PSQ's performing and teaching style."
