This year’s benefit will be held at the historical Cumberland Club. Delicious food follows a moving performanceby the Portland String Quartet. We invite you to join us for a delightful afternoon of beautiful chamber music with the Portland String Quartet, while savoring good company and delicious refreshments.

Proceeds from the Benefit support opportunities for listeners of all ages and incomes to experience chamber music through the concerts and educational activities of thePSQ.

History of the Cumberland Club Residence

John Kimball built this Federal-style home in 1800, 20 years before Maine would become the 23rd state. It was built for Steven McLellan, a merchant and ship owner. The War of 1812 and consequent British embargo diminished McLellan’s fortune and the home changed hands. The last private owner was Mr. H. R. Jose, an owner of Portland Glass Company. Examples of this decorative glass are found in the USS Maine Room. Spared by Portland’s great fire of 1866, the building became the home of The Cumberland Club in 1896.

The Cumberland Club was organized and incorporated by a special act of the Legislature in 1877 as a voluntary association “for the purpose of mutual enjoyment of cultural and social amenities.” Early members included Civil War hero Joshua Chamberlain, Governor Baxter, and Speaker of the House Thomas Brackett Reed. From Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Olympia Snowe and Hillary Clinton, national figures have found a place to relax at the Cumberland Club.

Today the Cumberland Club provides fine dining, elegantly appointed rooms for entertaining, and engaging events enjoyed by a diverse membership hailing from many professions

Showcasing students and their achievements through high school and graduate school, the LARK/PSQ annual benefit celebrates both the performance and teaching expertise of the Portland String Quartet. The music this year will include performances by the PSQ of Mozart and Debussy, but two talented students who trained with the PSQ will wow us with a Bach violin solo by Sara Wasdahl, and Emma Cifrino violist will perform the opening movement of the Brahms Viola Quintet in G Major with the PSQ.
